About Us

At Rikzen, we proudly bring you beautifully handcrafted nuno zori, made by skilled artisans in Japan. These slippers represent not only comfort, but also a story of tradition, resilience and healing.

The Tradition of Zori in Japan

Zori are traditional Japanese sandals that have been worn for centuries. Originally made from materials such as straw or wood, zori were valued for their simple, functional design. Historically, they were worn outdoors with kimono and other traditional attire, with the raised soles providing protection from dirt.

Today, zori have evolved into modern styles — including comfortable indoor slippers like ours, designed for no-shoes homes. Zori reflect Japanese aesthetics of minimalism and fine craftsmanship. Their open design encourages natural foot movement and toe engagement, and has long been appreciated for promoting good foot health, including helping to prevent issues like bunions.

Origin Story

I was born and raised in Japan, surrounded by many of the small everyday traditions that make Japanese homes feel warm and intentional. On a trip back home, I visited a local market and came across a pair of nuno zori slippers — handwoven house slippers blending comfort and beautiful craftsmanship.

I instantly fell in love with their simplicity and thoughtful design, and wanted to share this part of Japanese daily life. That’s how Rikzen began: with a desire to bring small-batch, handmade nuno zori to people outside of Japan, while honoring the artisans who continue this craft.

The Artisans' Story

Many of the artisans who create Rikzen slippers first learned to weave nuno zori while living in evacuation shelters after the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami. What began as a way to bring comfort, healing, and purpose during a time of unimaginable loss has grown into a supportive community of skilled craftspeople across multiple cities in Japan.

Each pair of slippers is meticulously handwoven using carefully selected fabrics, offering a soft, durable, and breathable fit for everyday wear.

By choosing Rikzen, you’re directly supporting these artisans — individuals who have turned creativity into a source of empowerment, community, and purpose. We are honored to partner with them and share their beautiful work with the world.

The Meaning Behind Our Name

The name Rikzen is inspired by the Rikuzen area in the Tōhoku region of Japan — one of the areas most deeply impacted by the 2011 earthquake and tsunami. Many of the artisans we work with are from this region, and their work represents not only craft and skill, but resilience, rebuilding, and community. The name is a small way to honor where this story began.
