FAQ

What are Nuno Zori?

Nuno Zori are traditional Japanese indoor slippers made from woven fabric, typically cotton, and feature a soft, flexible base. "Nuno" means fabric in Japanese, and "Zori" refers to traditional Japanese sandals. These slippers are handwoven, designed to promote natural foot movement, and offer a comfortable fit that molds to your feet over time. They provide an alternative to mass-produced slippers, combining craftsmanship, comfort, and a touch of Japanese culture.

What are rikzen slippers made of?

Our zori slippers are handwoven from soft cotton fabric, with a polypropylene rope core that adds durability and structure. They’re designed to be breathable and incredibly cozy — perfect for everyday wear around the home.

We're also exploring alternative core materials with a lower environmental impact, while maintaining the comfort and support our slippers are known for.

How do I choose the right size?

View our size guide here.

The strap feels too tight!

Some tightness is normal at first, think of it like breaking in a good pair of shoes. The straps naturally loosen within a few wears. If needed, you can fine-tune the fit by pulling on the strap or adjusting the knot on the underside of the slippers.

The slippers I ordered are too small!

Don’t worry — this is actually very normal when it comes to Nuno Zori!
In Japan, it’s common (and even considered cool, or “koiki”) to wear them with the heel slightly off the edge. It might feel unusual at first if you're used to Western-style shoes that fully cup the heel, but that's part of their charm.

Also, the fabric will naturally stretch and mold to your feet over time — so they’ll become even more comfortable the more you wear them.

Can I machine wash my rikzen slippers?

Yes! Our slippers are machine washable. Place them in a mesh laundry bag and wash on a gentle cycle with cold water. Do not machine dry.

Are these slippers suitable for outdoor use?

Our slippers are designed for indoor use only. They keep your feet warm and clean, especially in areas like the kitchen and bathroom.

Can I wear them in the summer or during warmer months?

Yes! The cotton knit fabric is breathable and machine washable, making rikzen slippers perfect for year-round wear, especially in warmer months.

How do these slippers benefit foot health?

Wearing nuno zori engages the muscles in your toes and encourage more natural foot movement. In Japan, nuno zori is often recommended by health professionals as part of a healthy lifestyle.
Note: Our slippers are not a medical device and are not intended to diagnose, treat, or cure any medical condition.

Can I buy Nuno Zori slippers as a gift?

Absolutely! Nuno Zori slippers make a unique and thoughtful gift. They are handwoven with care and are suitable for anyone who appreciates quality, comfort, and craftsmanship. Since these are slip-on slippers without heels, sizing doesn’t have to be exact.

Where are these slippers made?

Our Nuno Zori slippers are handmade by skilled artisans in Japan. Most of our knitters are from the Tohoku region and the Kanto region of Japan. Each pair is crafted with attention to detail and supports women in communities affected by the 2011 earthquake.
